A different oil pump option
Using a flathead V8 oil pump. To alleviate any confusion about oiling the transmission, the transmission shaft has a hole down the center and a side hole and is fed from the rear main bearing. I first used this concept over 40 years ago and it worked great!

I had to extend the back of the camshaft about one and a half inches.
I figure the advantage is that priming the oil pump is longer a issue as the pump is immersed in the oil!!

Going back to what really works or known! Looks good Les.
The VW pumps were meant to be submerged not elevated as most do..., we had a lot of them fail. Only gear driven for us.

I interested in the system you describe. Please provide some more information??
My experience with the VW is that I ALWAYS “blip” the throttle immediately on start up and then it worked OK. Now I’m trying to make it more “idiot proof “ so my heirs can have fun with it!!

Les I am currently using the generator well drive via a Datsun B210 pump. But in the future, going to build a side drive for that pump in a different location to give more options. Really busy with other things currently.

Years ago I thought about building a drive adapter that fit in there with the generator behind it with the idea of mounting the oil pump below it. Also considered the “dry sump” concept.

I guess that the aluminum cylinder with the hole is the pickup and I believe I can see a filter inside.a couple of questions which I suspect many would like to know more details.
Is the pump as low as the pan will allow?
How did you connect the gear to the rear of the camshaft?
How does the oil that accumulates behind the shield get back to the pump side of the shield?

The elevation of the pump is a function of the location of the camshaft and the length of the oil pump, so I really have no decision there.
The oil pickup I located to a “practical” location low in the pan.
The camshaft extension is by drilling a 1/2” hole about a inch into the end and making a piece of 3/4” bar that is about.0015” interference and with some heat and pressure it is now locked in place. Then when cool, machine to 5/8” to fit the gear, a woodruff key and a snap ring.
The gear is installed when the camshaft is in place.
Hopefully this helps.

The “flywheel windage tray” concept I first used in the ‘70’s and it has worked great. Part of it is the drilled transmission shaft. I have installed a small spray nozzle above the bands.
This engine is getting a era accessory 3 speed sliding gear transmission, so some of that lubrication is yet to be designed!!
