I was studying a “vintage welding book “
I thought people might find this “interesting/amusing “
I haven’t personally tried it.

How many people stretched a valve?
I have seen pictures & descriptions of valve stems being heated above the guide area & pulled to lengthen.
How did the head get squared back up to the stem?

Les, thanks for posting this. Is it possible the valve would need to be water-hardening steel for it to work? Lot's of left over used valves here in the engine shop, I'll try it soon.

David
Just something I found in a “vintage “ welding book. Most steel will harden when quenched like this.

Les,

There's a quite detailed paper on valve cooling here:

https://fredstarr.com/wp-content/upload ... ooling.pdf

It's not related to your post but I think you would find it interesting.

Fred Starr (retired UK metallurgist) has written a few other papers on the history of valves that are worth tracking down.
